LONGEVITY TIPS
- Make sure the PCV valve is working properly.
A clogged PCV valve will cause rapid oil sludge formation and deposit buildup.
This is because the valve permits engine
vacuum to remove oil vapors that shorten the oil's useful life. If the
valve or PCV hose is clogged, noxious vapors accumulate in the crankcase but are
released through other smaller openings (e.g., oil filler cap, dipstick tube,
valve cover
gasket).
Sludge will then form in the oil
pan. A clogged PCV valve can also cause oil to leak out of the vacuum lines
connected to the engine or air filter housing.
- Do not tamper with or attempt to disable any
emission control device on the engine (e.g., PCV, EGR,
oxygen sensor,
air injection, catalytic converter,
vapor canister, etc.) in order to obtain better gasoline mileage. It is
a violation of the law and will most likely decrease engine performance and
engine life. Furthermore, the engine will emit more pollutants and gasoline
mileage will actually decrease.
- Do not attempt to save money by cleaning a dirty
PCV valve. Always replace a dirty PCV valve with a new one. The valve
is inexpensive and is necessary to prevent engine damage.
